PHILATELY
BAY OF PLENTY SOCIETY
INTERESTING AUGUST MEETING
Although the weather was not very favourable for the Philetic Society’s meeting held at the residence of Mr Coates, 6 Haig Street, last Wednesday, there was quite a good attendance. Mr H. O. Garaway, who presided, extended a warm invitation to Mr H. Pearce of Orakei, Auckland, who was present. Mr Garaway gave a talk on the
1898 issue of N.Z. pictorial stamps, and he also prepared a mounted sheet of each stamp printed, defining the different perforations, papers and colours of this very famous issue. • L
A very valuable collection of N.Z. early Air Mail Covers of N.Z. owned by Mr H. -T. Pettit of Wellsford, was displayed. This collection was beautifully mounted and each page was distinctively written up by the late Mr'Guest, James Street, Whakatane. Very much credit was given by Mr Pettit to Mr Guest for the patience andinterest taken in mounting this collection.
Whakatane was represented in this collection by two covers carried by “Seaplane” from Auckland to Whakatane and return on a special flight by the Catholic Bishop of Auckland.
Next meeting, the Society has been offered by Mr Phillips, of Rangiora, a display of his collection, comprising 500 ships depicted on all stamps in his collection.
