VARSITY DEGREE

EDGECUMBE PUPIL S SUCCESS

Among those students who gained a N.Z. University Degree in 1945 was Mr John Hawken who is now managing his father farm “Rochr ford” at Edgecumbe. He recently completed his Bachelor of Agricultural Science Degree at Massey College. John has given his primary school at Edgecumbe cause to be proud of him. While attending that school and only ten years of age, he first came into prominence by saving one of Jhis school companions from drowning in the Rangitaiki River. For this act of bravery he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Certificate for saving life. After gaining his certificate of proficiency at the age of twelve at the Edgecumbe School, he attended the Mt. Albert Grammar School where he gained his Higher Leaving Certificate, Medical Preliminary and Matriculation Examinations, v He then studied at the Auckland University College where he rounded off a brilliant school career by gaining his B. Agr. Sc. In the realm of sport John represented Massey, for the 1943 and 1944 seasons in Rugby. We commend this boy’s achievement as a worthy example'to the boys and girls of the district in general and to those of his old school in particular.
