RED CROSS ACTIVITIES
AUGUST MEETING The monthly meeting took place in the Red Cross Rooms on Wednesday, 13th August, a number of ladies sewing for overseas were also present. Mrs B. S. Barry was in the chair. • Mrs Barry reported that the street stall held on the previous Friday had raised over £27. It was resolved to make up the sum already donated for Food for Britain (approximately £B4) up to £IOO, and send it to the Waikato Centre to be used for the purpose of buying food in bulk to send to Britain. Mrs Winstone reported that garments made and despatched by the Red Cross Society’s sewing drive in June amounted to 678. She had been to CORSO headquarters when in Wellington recently, and was told these four cases, and the ones previously despatched by -the CORSO Committee would leave Wellington by the middle of this month. Mr Colin Morrison, secretary of CORSO and Mr Gifford Male, publicity officer, expressed surprise and great appreciation of the amount of money raised in this district for CORSO.
These officers also fully approved of the formation of the Red CrossCORSO committee recently formed in Whakatane, which they called “a very wise arrangement.” Mrs Sullivan’s appointment as delegate to the Joint Committee of Red Cross and the Order of John for a further period was Approved. Remits to come before the forthcoming annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the Red Cross Society were discussed. It was decided that the next street stall should be held on Friday, September 27th. Mrs James served a much appreciated afternoon tea, and the meeting concluded.
APPEAL FOR CLOTHING The Red Cross Committee has received an appeal from headquarters for 10,000 warm undergarments for orphaned children in Greece. A New Zealand doctor serving with CORSO describes the pitiful condition of the children in the snows of a Greek winter without warm clothing. There is a continuous request for good used clothing, especially men’s and the Red Cross' committee will be very grateful for any donations. These can be left at the Red Cross Rooms on any Tuesday between 1 and 4 p.m; or will be collected by arrangement with the secretary, Mrs Winstone, telephone 348, or the president, Mrs Sullivan, telephone 59.
