Getting Ready For Action Hector Gray’s jumper, The Dozer, is progressing satisfactorily in his track work, and is a leading favourite for the Pakuranga Hack Steeplechase. Shaping Into Form Hippodrome, winner of the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting last winter, is improving week by week and should be well forward in condition for spring engagements. A New Handicapper Mr E. Wilson, at one time secretary to the Rangitikei Racing Club, has been appointed handicapper to both the Marton and Rangitikei Clubs. Ellerslie Additions Included in R. G. Stenning’s team at Ellerslie is Flying Officer, a halfbrother by Dink to Billy Peach. The latter is now being trained by L. C. Brown. A Good Recovery The Coronach colt, Keening, a winner at the Wellington meeting last spring, but who met with an accident while contesting the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton in November by colliding with a rail, has made a good recovery, and is now resuming racing. Rack to the Battens Shadow King who prevailed in the Handicap Hurdles at Tauranga, after being tried on the flat at the Avondale fixture, is to again join the hurdlers, and will carry the colours at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Change of Location Typhoon has been transferred from a Hastings stable to that of H. R. Telford at Trentham. When at his best the Defoe—Doe gelding is indeed a brilliant galloper, but may be just a little difficult to train. Brother to Theophilus Grand Tourist and Silk Thread have joined A. Tinker’s team at Takanini. The latter is a full brother to the Te Aroha trained Theophilus and will be expected to exhibit galloping brilliancy. Liberal Stakes - —.... —.... .. _ , . The Otago Hunt Club has allotted £7OO in stakes for its Hunt Cup Steeplechase, and it is expected that North Island candidates will line upon the occasion. The Waikato Hunt Club, which races af Cambridge on Labour Day, has materially increased its prize, money. The principal flat event, the Members’ Memorial, will be worth £6OO and the Hunt Cup Steeples £9OO, with £6OO to the winner. Re-commissioned After a brief “let up” Hector Gray again has Hot Pursuit in work at Takanini. The Foxbridge—Caliente gelding, now a six year old, should have a successful racing career. Despite the heaviness of the tracks 'at present he is skipping over three furlong dashes in 39 secs. A Real Veteran Among the interested public on Grand National Day at Riccarton, was Mr Harry Thompson. In 1884 he rode Black Rose to victory in the N.Z. Derby and the following year was victorious with Stonyhurst. He is now 86, fit and well and can justly claim to be a real racing veteran.
