BOXING

LAST NIGHT’S TOURNAMENT SEVENTEEN AMATEUR BOUTS GOOD PUBLIC SUPPORT Fight fans turned ourt in force to witness the all-amateur tournament staged by the Whakatane Boxing Association in the Winter Show Buildings last night. A total of seventeen amateur bouts were contested, and without exception, each and every one had the crowd on its toes. The lads, who came in all weights and sizes put up excellent displays, and must be congratulated on their performances. A number of competitors who stepped into the ring, hailed from Mt. Maunganui and Ngongotaha and supplied plenty of tough competition for the local boys. All were hard hitters and skilful boxers; but every man who put the gloves on was out to win.

The fights were refereed by Mr A. Hogg and Mr F. Cameron, Mr B. •Magee and Mr F. Cameron acting as announcers. Altogether thirtyfour boxers, representing, Whakatane, Taneatua, Edgecumbe, Waimana, Matata, Ngongotaha and Tau.ranga were matched. Particulars of bouts follow: Paperweight P. Cruther 4.4 (Waimana) drew ‘with M. Williams 4.5 (Edgecumbe); P. Johnston 6.12 . (Tauranga) beat J. Nathan 6.12 (Edgecumbe). Technical K.O. Flyweight E. McKinnon 7.1 (Ngongotaha) beat A. Crewther 7.0 (Waimana) points. Bantamweight B. Bennett 7.8 (Taneatua) beat K. Williams 8.3 (Edgecumbe) points. Featherweight M. Crawford 8.7 (Mt. Maunganui) beat N. Swinton 9.0 (Edgecumbe) Lightweight The crowd received its first taste of real scrapping in the third bout of the evening between M. Matchitt .10.0 (Edgecumbe) and A. Green 9.0 (Edgecumbe). Matchitt went into the first round like a whirlwind and kept up the pace right through. In the second round, Green built up points with a number of punches that found the mark. The third round was punch for punch all the way .through. The bout resulted in a draw.

In their bout, W. Crawford 9.12 (Edgecumbe) and B. Murphy 10.2 (Taneatua) boxed the first round out of reach of each other, but woke up in the second round when Crawford who came about up to Murphy’s shoulder and had about half the reach flew in to attack. In the third round Murphy tried to hand it back, but from where we sat at any rate, it looked as if Crawford had the best of things all the way. The decision went to Murphy on points.

The only knock-out of the evening came in the third round of the J. Baty 9.10 (Edgecumbe) v D. Murphy 9.8 (Taneatua) bout, when Murphy, who put up a game fight, held his own for the first two rounds went down to Baty’s left. Action marked the whole scrap. H. Woods 9.6 (Whakatane) and P. Batchelor 9.8 (Ngongotaha) really boxed their bout, Woods particularly, in the opening round, showing excellent footwork and a good style. In the second and third rounds the lads mixed things properly and the bout ended in a draw.

J .Hudson 9.4 (Whakatane) and W. Baty 9.12 (Edgecumbe) were a good match. For three rounds, they slugged each other toe to toe with no let up. Hudson was superior on the in-fighting, but took his share of punishment just the same. Baty, a new chum to the ring put Up a good show against his opponent, a much more experienced fighter. The bout was a draw.

B. Penny 9.0 (Whakatane) met D. Glover 9.0 (Taneatua) in a bout marked by action right through. Penny, although considerably shorter than his opponent, went in like a rubber ball, and dodging dangerous haymakers right and left, pushed his gloves through to the right shots sufficient to gain the decision on points.-

N. Lewis 9.6 (Ngongotaha) met B. Parkinson 9.6 (Matata) in a bout marked chiefly by a display of good boxing. The decision went to Parkinson on points. Middleweight B. Caverhi 11 10.12 (Matata) beat P. Pouwhare 9.8 (Taneatua) on a technical knockout in the third

round. Pouwhare put up a good fight, but lacked the boxing skill to keep up with Caverhill. The fight was stopped in the third round. Although Pouwhare showed no external damage, he took a lot of punishment. Fists flew in toe to toe slogging in the W. Yeoman 10.10 (Taneatua) v W. Tierney 10.10 (Edgecumbe) scrap. Yeoman carried the fight to Tierney in the first two rounds, but in the third Tierney brought to light a beautiful straight left which wore Yeoman down quickly. A drawn bout resulted. Welterweight Real boxing came to the fore in the scrap between P. Tenaiti 10.2 (Whakatane) and J. Raymond 10.11 (Mt. Maunganui). In the first round Raymond showed himself well acquainted with ringcraft and displayed a left like a striking rattler. Tenaiti was very light on his feet, but forgot about his guard until he hit the canvas once. In the second round, Tenaiti opened up with a succession of short vicious jabs which built up points. Raymond boxed all the way through the thm round but Tenaiti gave back enough to gain him the bout on points. Light Heavyweight

J. Maxwell 12.5 (Whakatane) and J. Conn 12.0 (Matata) made four gloves do plenty of work in a whirlwind bout. There was little to pick and choose between either man both being good scrappers, and giving the public plenty of action. The decision went to. Conn on points. Heavyweight

The one heavyweight bout of the evening was a contest between A. Caverhill 11.9 (Matata) and J. Raymond 12.5 (Mt. Maunganui). The first round was even slugging, Raymond giving it at the beginning, but taking it at the end. The second round went to Caverhill who carried the attack to Raymond with plenty of aggressiveness. In the third round, Caverhill had it all his own way, and the fight ended in a win for the Matata man. The fight was easily the toughest of the evening, and supplied a great finish to the contest.

At the conclusion of the evening, the announcement was made of the award of a special trophy, donated by Mrs Candy, to the best loser of the evening. This was won by J. Maxwell.
