FLOOD PREVENTION
NATIVE LAND AREA SUGGESTED AFFORESTATION The fact that the Wairere Stream which fe'eds the falls above the eastern Strand, has been the cause of several severe floods during the past two years, has led the Borough Council to approach the Native Department, through whose property the stream flows. The Department’s reply which was received last Monday evening intimated that Messrs. G. W. Turnbull (Civil Engineer), G. H. Mclndoe (Horticulturalist) and E. Morice (Field Surveyor) would be visiting Whakatane with a view to making recommendations for a remedy. These would include the suggestion of afforestation over suitable areas along the stream course. Cr Sullivan said that the Ngatiawa Native Scheme was situated along practically the whole course of the stream and from what he had learnt from Judge Shepherd of the Native Court there was every prospect of afforestation being carried out as a suitable preventative measure.
