WOMENS INSTITUTE

WAIMANA-NUKUHOU A very pleasant 17th birthdoy was celebrated by the WaimanaNukuhou Women’s Institute last Wednesday afternoon in the Waimana Hall, Mrs F. J. Savage presiding over a large attendance of members and' visitors. The singing of the Ode to Friendship, opened the proceedings, Mrs Savage welcomed all and hoped everyone present would have a pleasant afternon. Telegrams, conveying birthday greetings were received from the following Institutes: Whakatane, Edgecumbe, Thornton and Taneatua and in invitation to attend the Waiotahi W.I. birthday on August 23rd

in the evening. The balance sheet of the Novelty evening held recently for Institute funds showed a credit of £2B.

Mi's Currie was welcomed as a new member.

_ A competition guessing the names of songs, arranged by Mrs King, was won by Mrs R. Brown. An amusing sketch entitled “Eternal Question,” was well acted by two members of the Drama Circle, Mrs G. Mitchell and Mrs A. Mortenson. Two little girls, Kay and Dawn Stubbs then tap danced very nicely and were greatly applauded, they also danced the “Irish Jig.” Mrs Grant Mitchell delighted the assembly with two vocal solos. Another well acted sketch was “The Only Way” Mrs D. Boynton and Mrs R. White being the actresses and received a great ovation. Mrs J. Mitchell was the producer thanks also go to her for her untiring efforts to encourage the Drama Circle of the Institute.

A wall competition, arranged by Mrs I. Savage, was won by Mrs M. King. The lucky cup was held by Mrs Tizard at afteimoon tea, Mrs Pai-kinson occupied the lucky seat. Aftei’noon tea was served by the members, and the candles on the birthday cake were lit and blown out by visiting presidents, and the cake cut by Mrs K. Brown, President of the E.B.P.P. Executive Committee.

A sales table did quite brisk business at the conclusion of the day. The singing of the National Anthem closed a most enjoyable afternoon.
