RACING NEWS & VIEWS
A High Ranker Included in H. Dulieu’s New Plymouth team is Mr J. Alexander’s Colombo colt purchased for 3000 guineas. On pedigree lines, conformation and galloping ability he is highly assessed.
Swift Quarry For the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton Swift Quarry refused to line up at the barrier, and was left fully four lengths. Since then he has shown signs of soreness, and has been brought back to Te Rapa.
A Wanganui Contestant The Wanganui jumper, Master Francis, is being prepared for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup to be run on the 17th inst. The four year old" Francis Drake gelding is executing his track work exceptionally well, and the trip should be justified. A Payable Proposition
The Otago owned Knight Crusader scored his third successive victory by his win in the Salma Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and is expected to continue his winning career. The 3000 Guineas Colt The lambridge bred Lord Barwon (late Barwon) has been elevated to the position of first favourite for the Melbourne Cup, consequent upon W. Cook having been engaged to ride him in the two miles event. In the meantime it can hardly be assumed that the black colt is equal to galloping out the full distance. He is to be started in a seven furlongs race at Flemington on August 31, and a line will be gained as to his racing condition. Takanini Results In the racing season just ended Takanini trained horses won in stakes £42,891, for 65 wins and 39 placings. Top of the trainers list there is Fred Smith with £15,430, Hector Gray being next with £7480. Steadily Improving Three months ago Stock Exchange appeared to be on the down grade, his performance not being of highgrade. Recently, however, he has shown improvement, and in the New Lynn Hurdles at the Avondale meeting ran a solid race to finish second to Slavonik, conceding the latter 241bs in weight. Trained by A. McArthur at Matamata he should run prominently at meetings up to November next. Co-operation The Waverley Racing Club has withdrawn its objection to the Wellington Club holding its spring meeting at Awapuni, provided it is protected against loss through the clashing of dates. Wellington is agreeable to this, and it is likely both meetings will be held on the same Saturday. The Dominion’s Betting In the year ended March 31, the Dominion’s totalisator investments reached the record total of £18,748,552 from which the Treasury of New Zealand received the appreciable amount of £1,720,000.
