PIG MEAT PRICES

NEED FOR INCREASE MR W. SULLIVAN’S QUESTION An appeal to the Minister of Marketing to approach the Economic Stabilisation Commission and see if the price of pig meat could be increased was made by Mr W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty), speaking in the House of Representatives. The falling off in killings had been due to the fact that pig producers were not receiving a price that would pay them to rear pigs. The new price given by the United Kingdom for pig meats was being increased by lli per cent, while other meat prices were being increased by only 7J- per cent. A new season was opening, and if the dairying industry could be assured immediately of a reasonably increased price he had no doubt that the farmers would endeavour to produce more pig meats. If the United Kingdom was prepared to offer a considerably increased price for pig meats, then it was up to New Zealand to make a serious effort to produce what the United Kingdom needed.
