RED CROSS WORK

JUNIOR DIRECTOR AT TANEATUA

Last Tuesday Taneatua received a visit from Miss Hadfield, DirectorGeneral for N.Z. of the Junior Red Cross. Miss Hadfield was accompanied by Mrs Winstone, .of Whakatane, who is Junior organiser for this district.

At Taneatua they were joined by Mrs N. Semmens and proceeded to visit the four schools of the district namely Tawera, Ruatoki, Opouriao and Taneatua. At each school Miss Hadfield addressed the children. She told them that the present aim of the Junior Red Cross was to send a shipload of toys to those children who had suffered severely through the war and who had not had toys for years. She stressed the fact that the toys need not be new and that toys the children had made themselves would be very welcome. The idea was enthusiastically seized upon by the children who are'already deep in the throes of sorting over their toy boxes. In the afternoon Miss Hadfield was the guest of the Senior Red Cross Committee. Miss Hadfield addressed the gathering and said she thought we must train our children to abhor war to be sure of peace in the future. As Hitler trained his children for war so we must train ours for peace. Afternoon tea served by the committee brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close.
