WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT TANEATUA MUSIC AND DRAMA CIRCLE A very enjoyable meeting of the Taneatua Women’s Institute Music and Drama Circle was held at Mrs Bennett’s residence one evening recently. ' There was a good attendance of members and the evening passed all too quickly. Plays were read in quest of one to be presented at the forthcoming Drama Festival which will be held at Taneatua in September. Most of those present signified their willingness to take part in-the play selected if required and Mrs Grey was appointed as producer. Two pianoforte duets presented by Mrs Peebles and Mrs Flavel were enthusiastically received. The serving of supper concluded the evening.

Gardening Circle

The July meeting of the Taneatua Women’s Institute Gardening Circle was held at Mrs Grey’s. There Was an excellent attendance of members and Mrs Hayward presided. Mrs Grey gave two readings, one on seasonal work in the vegetable garden,- the second being “Winter Cheer in the Garden.” A competition jumbled names of flowers was won by Mrs Fogerty while a memory test was won by Mrs Bennett. Being an unfavourable season of the year there were few flowers in the garden but a lovely daphne bush scented the whole garden with its sweet perfume, While a fine Acacid Bailyiana in full bloom provided a welcome splash of colour.

Mrs Bennett and Mrs Fogerty served an enjoyable afternoon tea, and Mrs Butler judged the competitions as follows: Best flower, Mrs Oliver 1; Mrs Fitchett 2; Mrs Hayward 3. Best shrub, Mrs Hayward 1; Mrs Fitchett 2; Mrs Fogerty 3. Decorated saucer, Mrs Hayward 1. Best vegetable, Mrs Doran 1; Mrs Hayward 2.
