Southland’s Hope In recent years Southland has produced winners of important jumping events, consequent upon trainers in that province believe thoroughly in schooling their candidates over a variety of obstacles. It’s hope this year for Grand National honours is the Lord Quex —Arab Song gelding Arabian Night. It has been reported that the Dominion’s leading steeplechaser, Master Meruit, is to be fired on account of having sprung a suspensory ligament.
Backed for the Cups Barwon owned by • Messrs. E. A. and A. E. Bowler, of Auckland, and Mr Rosa, who carries the colours of the latter, have been backed for over £IOO,OOO to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The commission was worked in Melbourne and Sydney on the same day.
