A FEATURE COLUMN “FRENCHMAN’S CREEK” A Modern Role In ‘Leave Her to Heaven’, on the point of release, Cornel Wilde plays his first modern role since he achieved such spectacular success in ‘A Song to Remember.'’ Dorsey’s Model Farm Tommy Dorsey, renowned as ‘the sentimental gentleman of swing’ lives on a 22 acre farm (when he’s home) in New Jersey. Bing Crosby designed Tommy’s swimming pool. Paradox Van Johnson, one of Hollywood’s top stars was turned down for the class plays when he was in high school. -His meteroic rise to stardom since, must have startled the producers of those same school plays.
Song Publisher Too Dick Haymes, musical star, has formed a song publishing company in association with three partners. The firm, to be known as the Beverley Music Company, will have offices in. New York, Chicago and Hollywood.
Screen Rights Bought Within twenty-four hours of his arrival in London last week, Hal Wallis concluded negotiations for the screen rights to the important new English role “For Her to See” by Joseph Shearing.
Tourists When he finishes his role as a concert pianist, in Paramount’s ‘The Imperfect Lady’", Anthony Quinn is going shopping for a tramp steamer to charter. The actor and a group of his cronies (including Akim Tamiroff) want to take a year off and make a round-the-world jaunt.
Authenticity The Arabian Nights harem atmosphere in ‘Anna and the King of Siam’ currently before the 20th Century Fox cameras, is definitely out. John Cromwell, the director of the picture, is such a stickler for historical accuracy that he insisted on the eighteen harem wives being clad authentically. His ‘Siamese’ women will wear panungs, which cover the body completely, and bear little resemblance to the usual filmy costumes seen in movie harem gcenes, . REGENT ‘Frenchman’s Creek’ (Sat. Mon. Tues., August 3, 5 and :6). Stars Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. This, the film version of Dauphne Du Maurier’s famous novel, has lost nothing of its really startling adventure and romance through picturisation. Rather, it has had the reverse effect. Patrons may remember that ‘Frenchman’s Creek’ was advertised on the Regent calander some time ago, but it did not arrive in Whakatane. It was instead, recalled for an extended season in Auckland, in order to cope with the demands of the audiences.
‘National Velvet’ (August 12, 13, 14 and 15). The picture heading M.G.M.’s list as the most important production for last year. The record seasons and wide audiences already attracted by ‘National Velvet’ during city bookings have established the reputation of this picture on its own merit.
