LIQUOR OFFENCES
PROHIBITION ORDER BREACHES MAORI SUPPLIED ‘ The presence of a number of Maori members of J. Force who were on final leave, prior to leaving for Japan was apparently the contributing factor to three cases concerning breaches of prohibition orders which were heard in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., last Tuesday. Accused were Rangi Kotua Wharepapa, Henry Hudson and Riri Whenua Kohua, all of whom pleaded guilty. Sergeant Farrell, who prosecuted, •stated that on July 5 last, all three had been found in public bars. Each had been prohibited for a number of years. Similar fines of £1 were inflicted with costs amounting to 225, 15s and 20s respectively. A further case concerned Whetu Eratara, who was charged with assisting some person or persons, unknown to supply liquor to a Maori, namely himself. The offence occurred on June 22 at Taneatua. Constable Thomasson recounted how shortly after 6 p.m. on the date •above he had discovered accused in possession of four bottles of ale. Accused would not say who supplied him.
A fine of £2 with costs 27s was inflicted.
