Mentioned in Despatches It is fitting to record that a local soldier also mentioned in despatches for .services in the Middle East and in Italy is Pte. W. M. Townshend of Thornton. Our warmest congratulations go to him and his family. Farming Accident The victim of an accident with a tractor, Geoffrey Conn, aged 16 years, a farm hand of Matata, was recently admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital suffering from injuries to his shoulders. His condition today is not serious.
Awakeri Basketball Dance
On Saturday next Awakeri boasts its brightest dance to date viz.—the Basketball Club’s annual. The committee responsible is endeavouring to make the evening a complete surprise packet and it would illbecome us to give the show away.
Beacon v United One match omitted from the list of competitional Indoor Basketball games to be played in the Winter Show Buildings this evening was the game Beacon v United, which will take place from 9.30 p.m. to 10 o’clock. Both teams are entered in the girls’ competition. Correction In our last issue we stated that the world famous singer Mr Peter Dawson, would be visiting Whakatane in the near future. In reality Mr Dawson will not be in this district until August 20 when he will., give a concert recital in the Grand Theatre,
Murphy Awaiting Confirmation Bos Murphy, New Zealand welterweight boxing champion, is still waiting on further information concerning the offer of an Empire title bout in England. If the terms are satisfactory, Murphy will not waste any time and would leave for England without delay.
Famine Emergency Campaign Following are particulars of ration coupons presented for cancellation in the “Food for Britain” campaign for the week ending July 27: Sugar, nil lbs; tea, nil lbs; butter, 81bs; meat £2 I9s 3d. The following are the collections of the respective goods to date: Sugar, 121bs; tea, 4 lbs; butter 1211bs; meat £B3 16s Bd.
Possession Case Withdrawn
Acting for H. V. and M. Wells in a claim for arrears of rent and possession of a house at Ohope Beach, from V. Hayward, Mr L. Buddie in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday intimated that the rent arrears had been paid into court and in view of the fact that defendant had brought himself under the protection of the law as a Returned Soldier, the case for possession would be withdrawn. On Mr Barry’s (defending counsel) application for costs and expenses, amounting to 32s were allowed. Ohope Spotlight
Although wet and miserable, Saturday night brought forth a very nice evening at the Cabaret, when Freddie Burt found an appreciative following with request numbers. Amongst those present we noted Mr and Mrs Whittaker, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Mr and Mrs Hay, Mr and Mrs T. Warner, Mr and Mrs J. Curtis and Mr and Mrs D. Boon (two recently arrived English brides). Misses Venables, Heather Reynolds, Shirley Otley, Mary Buddie, Jeannine Lodge, Joyce Martin and Beatrice Johnston of Rotorua, were also present.
