Snooker Following is the Whakatane Snooker team to play Matamata on Thursday evening, August 1. - The tournament will take place in Mr J. Hanwright’s billiard saloon, the Strand: T. Morgan, J. Thompson, Hona, R. Keesing, F. Cameron, S. Davis, M. McGarvey. Tenders Accepted The following tenders were accepted by the Whakatane County Council at its recent meeting: To painting Whakatane house £62 6s (Mr K. Needham); to painting County Council Chambers (interior) £sl 3s 9d (Messrs. Hanham and Hunter). Work in both instances is to be commenced within a month. Donation to Matata Domain Board In recognition of the efforts of the Matata residents to beautify their township, the Whakatane County Council has voted the sum of £25 to the Matata Domain Board as a charge against the Riding funds. Local efforts to raise funds for the formation of a Bowling green and camping site have realised recently £260. Honey Production Production of honey in New Zealand for the year ended March 31, 1946, has been estimated as not less than 3116 tons by the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture. A total of 93,4801 b. of commercial beeswax was produced in the same period. The number of registered beekeepers in the country is now 6798 and 140,703 hives are in operation. St. ‘John Annual Meeting Readers are reminded of the annual meeting of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance, an organisation which has leapt into local prominence over the past five years, and which takes place in the St. John Hall on Wednesday evening. The chairman for the district, Mr Harvey, and Commissioner Cobbe of the South Auckland district, will be in attendance. Baby Foils Power Board An B£lb. baby prevented the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board from cutting off the electricity supply throughout the whole of. the northern end of its area one morning recently. A cut-off between 2 and 3. a.m. had been planned to save power, but, just before the time came, there was an urgent telephone call from the local maternity hospital. A new baby was expected at any minute—and the lights had to stay on.
