“BROTHERS UNDER THE SKIN”
For an eventful century, The Maori and Pakeha races Have been held together, By the time proved graces Of Faith and Hope and Charity, Sure foundation of true unity. To err is human, but to love divine, Dark clouds have intervened, But virtues bright sunshine Ultimately shines through. Old pastures, give place to pastures new; Wilful waste has harvested the want Of many vital things, but hope still springs In heart’s too brave to fear, Prepared to meet the evils ever near, Fostered by man’s inhumanity to man. But Faith, Hope and Charity will devise a plan, To counteract the grasping greed, That fattens on another’s need,' May be of self control— Wealth gained by bankrupting the soul Of others, is an eternal curse, That haunts its owners long e’er the hearse Has carried their remains Away from their illgotten gains. But brave hearts and true fight on, The good remains when they have gone; To counteract the evil they have fought Both Maori and Pakeha, miracles have wrought. Though the way be dark, the fight be long, Victory at length, will crown the strong; The Maori and the Pakeha eventually will be Twin brothers in a happy family. H. SEPiGANT.
