TROUT FISHING
LIBERATION OF FRY STOCKING OF STREAMS At the general meeting of the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club, which was held in the Borough Council Chambers recently, the question of the liberation of trout fry was the subject of a lengthy discussion. From enquiries among members, the general estimate was that only aproximately 5 per cent, of the fry reached maturity. Only vague numbers, and no locations as to where fry had been liberated in the past could be obtained from members, although it was stated that if the sub-committee dealing with the matter so desired, the information could be obtained. It was likewise not definitely known what numbers in the allocation of fry were allowed to the Whakatane Club. > . : The chairman asked the meeting for information regarding the names of suitable streams for stocking with fry, and it was decided that all such places should be inspected and reported upon. The following places were recommended: Maungone; Waimakahu; Heraparu; White Pine Bush; Waimana; Tarawera and tributaries; Galatea Streams Otamarakau; Whakatane River several other streams within the district.
. Mr Stephenson Snr. gave a brief account of the methods used in the liberation of fry, and later sound and useful advice on the rearing of fry up to the fingerling stage. The following recommendation was carried: ‘That liberation of fry be carried out in the streams mentioned above after they have been approved, and that “brown” be released in the lower Teaches of the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Rivers.’
