RACING NEWS & VIEWS

StenelaHS in the News The Foxlight—Knock Out gelding Stenelaus, purchased a few months ago by an Australian sportsman at 1000 guineas, is making good on the other side. On Saturday he accounted for the Winter Handicap at Flemington in a field of 16, the winning stakes being £525. A Provision Overdue The time is well overdue when racing clubs might with advantage consider the provision of enlarging their number boards to allow the posting of the jockeys’ names for race divisions. Throughout the present season the present boards have merely had blank spaces when these divisions have been necessitated, and the majority of patrons have been practically in the dark as to who is riding and what the barrier draw numbers are. It has been one of the weak points of 1945-46 meetings. At Ellerslie the number board displays the scratchings, but country clubs have not yet even copied that small move under the heading of information. A £IO,OOO Stake It is on the cards that the prize money for the N.Z. Trotting Cup, will be £IO,OOO, the highest amount ever allotted in the Dominion by a racing or trotting club. Brother to'Barwon The Foxbridge—Ann Acre colt purchased at the 1946 National Sale by Mr Ken Austin, as agent, is to race in New Zealand under the colours of Mr H. Marzmeyer, of Melbourne. He will be trained at Masterton by T. R. George. Record Holder Sold The Auckland six furlongs record holder, Lord Luck, has been purchased from Mr Forsyth, of Avondale, by Mr W. Burns of Sydney. He was shipped to his new home last week. Two Good Rides Jockey A. Mid wood should have at least two good rides at the Canterbury National Meeting, for he has been engaged to pilot Blue Title in the G.N. Hurdles and Typhoon in the Winter Cup. Master Meruit Out Many early backers of. National candidates received a shock when

on Saturday Mr H. Dods, of Gisborne, announced that his horse

Master Meruit, was a probable nonstarter owing- to having received an injury. When the weights were published the name of Master Meruit was missing, Red Glare 10.10 being the topweight. Inka Destroyed.. ’ When Inka fell heavily at the second to last fence in the Windsor Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday he broke his neck and had to be destroyed. Inka, who was’ owned and trained by Harvey Evans, at Paeroa, was in a handy position at the time of the mishap. An aged bay gelding by Jay from Valda, Inka had his first start a fortnight ago at Tauranga, when he dead-heated for third place with Pomade in the Otara Hack Hurdles. Last week at Paeroa he finished second to his stablemate, Bettermusk, in the Tally~Ho Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. In each race he had revealed promise and high hopes were held for him as a jumper.

Careful Planning for Bernborough Though Bernborough has been nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, it is reported from Sydney that the champion’s days in handicap ranks may be over. The King’s Cup at Randwdck next spring is one of the races Mr Romano has in mind for Bernborough. It is run over one mile and a half with 9.5 as the maximum for the top weight. This race carries a trophy donated by the King, but it was dropped at the outbreak of war. The Australian Jockey Club’s handicapper (Mr F. Wilson) will have the task in front of him to make the King’s Cup a race, as with the limited weight he can give Bernborough he will have to keep the best of the others well down in the list to give them any chance with the champion. Bulldozer to be Prepared for Cup An interesting new candidate for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup is Bulldozer, who had great success during the past .season under V. Alborn at Addington. Bulldozer has not raced since Easter, when he injured a leg on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington, as a result of a 'smash in which Happy Man, Volo Senwood and Integrity were also involved. Before that he won five races on end in a manner that stamped him as being capable of footing it with Cup class horses. His injured leg has responded to treat-

ment, and his owner-trainer is now preparing him for important races in August and the next New Zealand Trotting Cup. He is at present assessed on a 4.20 mark for two miles. Hyperion Stallion Destroyed One of the most valuable stallions in Australia, the Typerion horse! Titan, who. was standing at Mr F. W. Hughes’ Kooba Stud, New South Wales, had to be destroyed recently. It was assumed that he injured himself when galloping in a paddock. Following immediate veterinary attention, he was sent from the Kooba Stud to Sydney to ensure the best possible attention, but despite the efforts of three well known veterinary surgeons, it was found necessary to destroy him. Titan, who was bred and raced ih England by Lord Rosebery, was imported to Australia in 1940. He could have been sold many times over once the stock of his sire, Hyperion, began to boom. Twelve of his progeny at the last yearling sales in Sydney aggregated .10.085 guineas. Northern Oaks Winner for Stud Alcyone, winner of the Great Northern Oaks in 1945, has been put out of training and will take up stud duties during the approaching season. A highly-strung mare, she was, nevertheless, a useful racehorse, and would have possessed a much better record had she completely conquered her fractiousness at the barrier. She faced the starter 17 times this term without winning, although on three occasions she filled minor places. During her career she contested 37 races for three firsts, four seconds, one third, and one fourth (where a stake was attached) for £1167 in stakes.
