RACING NEWS & VIEWS
Fresh Fields Last week reference was made to the win of the Matamata extrant, Hunto in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles. Apparently* it still pays to travel south for on Saturday last the Matamata trained Dumbo won the Steeplechase at New Plymouth, while Leigh Hark, trained at Ellerslie, was victorious in the Empire Handicap at Awapuni.
A Presentation Gold Cup In the year 1926 Mr W. J. Jongensen, of Wellington, won the Auckland Cup with Tanadees. In addition to the stakes he received a valuable Gold Cup. This he has now presented to the Wellington Racing Club, which will doubtless treasure the gift.
Change of Tenure The Waione Park stables at Takanini have been leased to Sir J. and Mr J. C. Fletcher, who will have a team in work shortly. Mr G. Salt has been appointed private trainer. A Reduced Number The Nicholson-Davis team at Takanini, has been materially reduced in number, the partnership having decided to only race about three or four candidates each season. Trainer T. F. Verner has in hand at present Sleepy Fox, Sahab and the Balloch —Gay Marigold filly. Balgowan Resumes Trainer Fred Smith has just taken in hand for the coming season Mr W. S. Goosman’s Balgowan, the winner of £3900 in stakes this racing term. A Breeding Freak According to the Brisbane mentor, Norman Conquest, Bernborough’s dam, Bern Maid, was the worst type of racer that could be imagined. She would not eat, she could not gallop and she was a kicker. After giving her three races at Albert Park he sent her back to her owner. How she came to produce a champion, he said, is a puzzle beyond solution. A Recovery The Te Awamutu hurdler, Brantome, who sustained a knee injury while schooling at Te Rapa in May last, has recovered from the injury. He is nominated for the Grand National Hurdles in August. Bernborough’s Future Although he may be a contestant in the Melbourne Cup in which racing experts expect him to be allotted list. Bernborough is not to be raced later in handicap events, and in November may be reserved for the King’s Cup. Sweet Girl for India The Hon. Elliot Davis’ and Mr O. Nicholson’s Foxbridge—Gay Marigold filly, Sweet Girl, has been purchased by an Indian sportsman. Last summer she won the Ruakura Stakes at Te Rapa, but later her behaviour at the barrier did not tend towards further victories being registered.
