FOOTBALLERS REUNITE

AWAKERI OLD BOYS > PLAYERS FOREGATHER At Awakeri last Saturday the Awakeri Football Club played the Awakeri Old Boys. The following were the teams:— Awakeri: Boulcott, Graham, Morgan, Brown, Jensen, Knight, Kelly, R. Philips, Melville, Newdick (3), Wilson, Crawford, Colebrook. Old Boys: Melville, Luke, Smith, Sutton, Jensen, Shaw, Rae, Jensen, Gardner, Hughes; Penny, Jones, Schou, Wickham, Watson, Melville. From the kick off Old Boys’ forwards capably led by their old captain, Charlie Wickham, took control of the game. It soon became apparent that as long as their condition lasted Old Boys would take a lot .of

beating. The Awakeri team generally was inferior in the tight but were too fast in the loose.

An unfortunate accident occurred in the first ten minutes of play, C. Smith. Old Boys’ centre three-quar-ter going off with a broken collarbone.

Plalf-time found the scores Awakeri 15, Old Boys 6. In the second half, Old Boys threw the ball about like a club team and right to the final whistle they were hammering away at the Awakeri line. The game ended Awakeri 18 (three converted tries by Newdick 2 and Wilson, and a penalty kick by Newdick). Old Boys 12 (four unconverted tries by Hughes, Luke and Wickham 2). A return match is to be played in the near future.

Mr L. Perkins as referee ably controlled the game. In the evening some forty footballers and supporters gathered in

the Awakeri Hall for a re-union smoko. Mr A. L. Luke carried out the duties of chairman in a very capable manner. A long toast list was honoured with Auld Lang Syne bringing a happy evening to a close.
