WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT OTAKIRI j The Otakiri Women’s Institute held its July meeting in the Otakiri Hall recently. Being the usual Hospital Day all the competitions were for the hospital. Mrs Arm-. [ strong presided over a fair gathering of members. The meeting opened with the ‘Ode to 1 Friendship’ and the aspirations in unison. Business for the day dealt with the conference in Welington.

Roll Call, An emergency first aid hint (b) face cloth for patient, gave a good selection in both sections. I Entertainment for the afternoon [was given by the Whakatane Women’s Institute as an exchange programme. Mrs -Crozier, President of the Whakatane W. 1., on opening with a speech said what a pleasure it was to visit Otakiri and gave Mrs Armstrong a shoulder spray.

Mrs K. Stewart gave a very interesting demonstration of leather work and if time permitted was to have demonstrated cutting out leather gloves. The Whakatane Glee Circle sang two numbers which were heartily encored. Mrs Crozier then

demonstrated the making of a wool eiderdown which was of keen interest to the country women, with wool handy to use in this way. I A representative of the Blind Institute was then introduced and gave a very able address on the Institute and its great work in our ! midst for all the blind folk of New Zealand.. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Afternoon tea was then served-

Competitions for the' day were as follows:—A, Child’s scrap book: Mrs Peck 1; Mrs Cristall 2; Mrs Jussop 3. B, Serviette and tray cloth to [match: Mrs Cristall 1; Mrs Peck 2; Mrs Mayo 3. C, Sponge: Mrs Peck 1; Mrs Gilbert 2; Mrs Armstrong 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Jessup 1; Mrs Lord 2. Single flower: Mrs Cristall 1; Mrs Armstrong 2; Mrs Winters 3. Double flower: Mrs O’Sullivan 1; Mrs Armstrong 2; Mrs G. Murray 3.
