Old Friends in the Solomons
Land birds are abundant in the Solomon Islands, writes a correspondent of the Forest and Bird Society, especially varieties of the parrot and pigeon. A bird very much like the New Zealand pukeko is common in swampy regions, and several other birds very much like those in New Zealand are found. But visiting armed forces brought many cats and dogs with them as mascots, and it is feared that these animals, left behind to become halfwild and to breed, will become a serious menace to birds, especially ground birds.
