RACING NEWS & VIEWS
The Matamata Sprinter The Baloch—White Flower colt, Grey Moments, now i-ising three years, is being taken in hand again, by A. Me Arthur.. As a two year old he exhibited brilliancy and won-his races in splendid style. And this was while he was growing, so naturally he is highly assessed. A Real Veteran . The Michael Galindo gelding, Beethoven, has lately registered three placings in his three starts. In the Longbeach Handicap he did not get a clear passage,„but nevertheless • an third, quite a creditable performance for his age, 15 years. "In the Money" Te Wepu, an optsider who ran a second at Te Awamutu, and returned -his backers quite a long price is a four year old by Inflation from Lady Absurd, so on pedigree lines should be speedy. He is a member of R. H. Martin's Matamata team, and will be improved by his Waipa effort. A Speedy Juvenile One of the speediest juveniles in work at Riccarton is the colt Renown, by Beaulivre—Cuddle. Although it is now mid-winter he is scampering over three furlongs in 35 3-5-seconds in a manner that shows he could do even better if required. Why the name Renown registered is not known, for about three decades ago the Hon. J. D. Or,mond raced the Dreadnought colt Renown, who won the Hawke's Bay Guineas and other important events. Suffered a Rick Vindicator, the close relation to Phar Lap, after winning the Hunt Club Hurdles at Ellerslie, ran only fourth in the Orakei Hurdles on the third day. His connections were somewhat disappointed thereat, but it was soon learned that he had suffered a rick in the running, and his lack of finishing dash was explainable. As a six year old next season he may be very prominent over the battens.
Still Going Strong Mr Harvey Evans' Betterman, one of the most versatile candidates in the Dominion, now a seven year old is still racing successfully. This season he has won the Poland Cup, the Whangarei Park Handicap, the Otane Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, the Panmure Hurdles and the Pukekohe Steeplechase. During his racing career he has won in stakes £4247 10s.
