FINAL DEBATE

YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS WAIMANA DEFEATS OPOTIKI The final debate of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Young Farmers' Clubs debating competition for this year was held in the Parish Hall, Opotiki, on the evening of July 3. All seating accommodation was occupied and the audience was treated to some very excellent and witty argument on the subject "That the' cinema has had an undesirable effect on the moral welfare of the community." Film fans may compose themselves as the Waimana Y.F.C. debating team proved to the satisfaction of the adjudicator, Rev. Liggit, that Mickey Mouse, Betty Grable and the rest are not really a bad influence in our lives. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Challenge Cup for Y.F.C. debating in the Eastern Bay of plenty was presented to the leader of the Waimana team, John Cranswick, by Mr W. McCullugh, Opotiki manager for the Loan Co. and in congratulating Waimana, he also spoke very highly of the Opotiki District High School Y.F.C. team which had far from disgraced itself in reaching the finals, and also in the final debate. xne teams were: John Cranswick, John Marra and Dave White for Waimana, and D. Rasmussen, Gordon Abbot and Dick McDonald for Opotiki District High School. The total points awarded to each team were 357 and 338, respectively. The next stage of the Y.F.C. debating competition is an inter-dis-trict* debate between Eastern Bay of Plenty represented by Waimana, and Western, by Te Puna Y.F.C.s. This debate will be held in the Paengaroa Hall later in the present month; the dates and time will be published, beforehand. An inter-area Y.F.C. debate will follow and then an inter-Provincial and an inter-Island.* (International debating at the present time is being left mainly to Foreign Secretaries).
