INTERSCHOOL GAMES

; KUGBY AND BASKETBALL WHAKATANE v OPOTIKI Last Thursday an interchange of visits took place between the football and basketball teams of the Whakatane and Opotiki District High Schools, the A teams meeting at Whakatane and the second fifteens and the B and C basketball teams at Opotiki. Although there had been heavy rain the previous day, the grounds had dried out and were in quite good condition. Opotiki’s first fifteen was too heavy and too experienced for the Whakatane team. The home team’s forwards played well, particularly G. Goodall and B. Skelton, hooking the ball fairly regularly from set scrums and working well in the loose, but only occasionally did the backs handle with the speed and accuracy of which they have shown themselves capable, and their defence was not always sound. Two of their passing rushes that did not break down produced tries. The

game ended 18—6 in Opotiki’s favour, three converted tries and one unconverted, to two unconverted tries scored by B. Bell and D. Carling. An important factor in the visitors’ win was very good goal kicking. The Whakatane A basketball team seemed to take a considerable time to settle down, during which their opponents scored several goals. After the change-over, however, the local girls’ goal-throwing became much more accurate, while their opponents missed shot after shot, the game ending 14—10 in Whakatane’s favour.

The Whakatane. second fifteen likewise had to play against a heavier team, but a good even game resulted, with Whakatane pressing very hard for the last- few minutes but being unable to score. For Whakatane a try was scored by the wing three-quarter, Riddell, after a good run along the touch line, while prominent in the forwards were Petty, Seebeck and Wharewera. The final score, 3 all, was a fair indication of the merits of the two teams. The B and C basketball teams both played closely-contested games, Whakatane winning the former match 21—17, and Opotiki the latter 11—10.
