OHOPE ROAD

‘ONE TO FIFTY-EIGIITT’ 'QUESTION OF DEDICATION The possibility of obtaining a dedicated road along the stretch of Ohope Beach known as ‘one to fifty-eight’ was a matter which figured prominently in a discussion at the recent meeting of Ohope residents and ratepayers to form a Progress League. The question was brought to the fore when Mr A. J. Canning commented on the fact that he was paying £8 in rates for a section which fiad no dedicated road access, whilst .others further down the beach owning sections which fronted on to the dedicated portion of the road, wei’e, in many instances, paying no more than £l.

Replying, Mr H. C. McCready, the Riding member, who was present explained, in a humorous vein, that that was one of the penalties of the superiority complex of those on the famed ‘one to fifty-eight’ stretch. It was, he. said, a very difficult question. The opportunity had previously existed for a dedicated road, but the council had been refused by ratepayers along that strip. The position was totally different now. The ‘one to fifty-eighters’ could have ■caught the council on the hop at one time, but that body was not going to be sold any pups now. The council did.not want to take thousands ■of pounds worth of risk upon itself. Continuing, Mr McCready" said that if the question of dedicating the road arose again, a 100 per cent, approval on the part of ratepayers would be necessary. Nothing could be done on a majority vote alone, as it only required one man to extend his fence across the road, and everything would be upset. He did not know whether the Public Works Act could be invoked, but if it were possible, it would be a very expensive procedure. It was decided to petition the in an endeavour to have dedicated, the road along the frontages of the properties one to fifty - . eight.
