THE BOYS’ BRIGADE

A GROWING ORGANISATION RECENT ACTIVITIES The Ist Whakatane Company of the Boys’ Brigade held a wayfaring walk test on Saturday last. The day being cool and cloudy was ideal for walking. The company at 9.45 a.m. set out along the Taneatua road, and with much swinging of arms and happy chatter reached.a point just by the railway bridge in time for lunch. This was prepared in true pioneering fashion in a neighbouring paddock. The billy was boiled and potatoes and bacon fried in a short time and made to disappear in an even shorter time. After lunch a period was spent in nature study when the boys took the opportunity of collecting a variety of leaves from native trees and wild flowers which will be mounted for examination purposes. Just before leaving for home the party was greatly attracted by the Hunt which was being conducted in the vicinity. To most of the boys this was a new experience.

Opportunity was also taken by many of the lads to pass the one mile running test at which eight were successful. The boys were allowed to make their own pace home, journeys end being reached, about 3.45 p.m. While some of the firsttimers may have felt a little foot sore and weary, there is no doubt that everyone had a healthy and enjoyable day’s fun. Activity is expanding steadily in the Boys’ Brigade, and the public will have an opportunity to respond to the annual appeal to be conducted during the first week in July. This is the only period of the year in which funds may be solicited on behalf of the organisation and even in this week members are restricted to those by whom they are personally known. An authorised receipt is given for all donations, which will enable the Brigade to widen its activities and equipment. For an organisation which has been in existence in Whakatane for less than one year, progress has been rapid, and opportunity has been given an enthusiastic number of lads to experience considerable useful training and much general enjoyment.
