PROTEST RAISED

PROPOSED T.R. SANATORIUM

HAMILTON SITE NOT FAVOURED

The selection of Hillcrest (Hamilton) as the potential site for the erection of a South Auckland sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis patients was strongly criticised at the meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday, when it was decided to join Matamata in registering strong protest, against the site, as being unsuitable and within the fog belt.

Writing on the matter, the Matamata County Council advised that in the opinion of its members, the site was badly chosen, as fog was very prevalent in the winter, and that a heavy smoke pall from peat fires usually enveloped the district each summer. Such conditions would be extremely detrimental to the health of patients. In response to an enquiry, the Director-General of Health stated that a large number of prospective sites' were inspected, and that the incidence of fog was not considered important when weighed against the other advantages of the site. The Matamata Council, however, considered the welfare of the patients and staff should over-rule all other considerations.

Cr McCready contended that Whakatane was vitally interested and that the worn-out philosophy of putting an ambulance at the foot of the cliff instead of a fence at the top should not be allowed to apply again. He was supported by Cr Leslie who said that whichever way the money was found, through the State or by direct taxation, the ratepayers had to find it, and therefore should have a voice in the selection of a site. In his opipion, the reasons that swayed it to be on Hillcrest were because it was near Hamilton..

Crs Luxton and Wardlaw all spoke strongly in support of Matamata’s representations, and it was decided to make an urgent appeal to the Minister of Health as well as to the local members of Parliament.
