MEETING AT AWAKERI The monthly meeting of the Awakeri branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Awakeri Hall on June 18, Mrs Haultain presiding over a good attendance of members. After the correspondence was attended to, Mrs L. Carter gave a report on the meeting to discuss the alterations to the schedule of Home Industries of the A. and P. Society. Arrangements were made for the 17th Birthday Party to be held on July 16 and a varied programme planned. Members were very gratified with the success of the dance held recently to raise funds for W.D. work. Mrs Knight gave an interesting talk on early days in the district and .the difficulties of travelling and brought some photos of early Whakatane. Other members contributed reminiscences of arriving and settling here. Winners of the competitions were: Pikelets, Mrs Haultain 1; Mrs Jensen 2; Mrs Knight 3. Best flower, Mrs N. Carter 1; Mrs Wilson 2; Mrs Roberts 3. Best fruit, Mrs Roberts 1; Mrs N. Carter 2; Mrs Graham 3. Best vegetable, Mrs N. Carter 1; Mrs Wilson 2; Mrs Allan 3. The meeting closed with the singing of the W.D. song.
