OHOPE SIDE SCHOOL
ACTIVITIES COMMENCED ■ ' .■''•■ •■■ '■ ,; '-'''' f' "■" * \ ROLL NUMBERS HIGH The Ohope side-school commenced activities last Monday, with a roll totalling 41. Reporting on the matter at the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee, the chairman, Mr J. W. Wilson, stated that it had meant the loss of. two teachers from the staff of the main school, but the Headmaster had consented, as the arrangement was only a temporary one until, such time as permanent appointments were made. The Ohope member of the committee, Mr G. Mahy, had agreed to maintain contact with the school. The Headmaster intimated that the number of children and the variety of work carried on made the proper teaching of the six classes installed in the hall, an impossible job. Therefore, with the permission of the Presbyterian Hall authorities, one of the baches on the hill was also being utilised, and this made the position considerably easier. He suggested that the light partition which divided this latter could be easily removed, making one large room. , The chairman stated that the Board architect had carried out a thorough inspection of the hall, including the baches, and had come to the conclusion that the bach did not warrant alteration. However, if the situation as it stood at present were proving satisfactory, and provided the Presbyterian authorities did not request any more than the rent of 1 per week agreed upon for the hall, he suggested writing the Board, requesting permission to utilise the bach.
A resolution embodying this motion was carried.
