EMPLOYMENT SURVEY

ROTORUA AND BAY OF PLENTY FURTHER FIGURES Figures for further groups of industries have now been released by the District Employment Office. They give the position as at the 15th April last. The District Employment Officer, Mr J. McGlone, made favourable comment on the manner in which employers had co-operated with the Department by supplying accurately and promptly the returns asked for. “The data thus collected,” he continued, “is particularly valuable because it shows for the first time, the actual distribution of labour between industries and gives a concrete foundation for the consideration of employment matters and also shows the total labour shortage in the Dominion, where it is most acute, the classes of labour that are short, and the industries affected.” A reliable guide to Government in planning Public Works so as not to embarrass other industry unnecessarily is also provided and as a foundation for any imigration policy the information will be invaluable. The following figures apply to the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Employment District:— In Road Transport 34 units operate and employ 355 males and 22 females, of whom 10 males and 6 female's are under 21 years of age. The industry is well staffed with only one vacancy. Agencies, Accountancy Offices, etc. employ in 22 units, 42 males and 40 females. Vacancies exist for only 1 male and 3 females. With regard to provision of Lodging, Food and Drink (i.e. Licensed and Private Hotels, Restaurants, etc.), 92 units operate in the Roto-rua-Bay of Plenty area and employ 202 males and 537 females, a total of 739. Of the males 3 are under 21, and of the females 199 are under 21. Vacancies at the 15th April were for 5 males and 26 females.
