Edgecumbe Scouts Edgecumbe Scouts were very busy last weekend garnering from ever-y conceivable corner, bottles of every description. Results have been described as excellent and Scout Funds will benefit considerably. Timetable Alterations Attention is drawn to the advertisement appearing in today’s issue notifying alterations to the N.Z.R. Road Services timetable. The alterations effect services connecting with certain trains, and particularly refer to a new Rotorua-Auckland service. Native Minister’s Visit Word has been received by the local Native Welfare Officer, that the Minister for Native Affairs, Hon. H. G. R. Mason, will be in Whakatane about the 30th of this month. Representations will be made to the Minister by leading Maori tribal members, and other questions of vital importance will be discussed. Merchant Navy Men Welcomed At a recent dance the district was privileged to welcome home again, nine members of the Merchant Navy. Appropriately Freddie Burt and his Cabaret Band featured “Bell Bottom Trousers” in their programme and the Merchant Navy was seen on a steady course during the number. One of the men served in the Shaw, Saville Company’s “Wairangi” a ship lost by enemy action during the war. . Hunt Club’s Opening Day The Whakatane Hunt Club will hold its opening day tomorrow, when it is anticipated that over fifty visitors from the neighbouring Opotiki and Te Puke clubs will join local members ip following the hounds. The Hunt Breakfast will take place in the Taneatua Hall at 10.30 a.m. when all followers will muster preparatory to the day’s work. There is every reason to believe that the Hunt, the first of its kind to be held in this district, will be an outstanding success. C.Q.R.S.O. Concert Tuesday The special benefit concert to be staged in the Grand Theatre on Tuesday evening next promises to be the Show of Shows as far as Whakatane is concerned. Over sixty local artists will be appearing and some regular surprises are promised as far as talent is concerned. The whole programme has been promoted by Mr Ken Jarrett assisted by ex-Kiwi friends, and we? can promise all patrons a remarkable night of first class entertainment. New Paratrooper Cycles An advertisement in this issue announces the arrival of the new paratrooper model cycles on the market. Readers may remember a report which appeared in the Beacon last year concerning the demonstration cycle of the type developed for use by parachute troops, which was forwarded to agents by B.S.A. Main qualities possessed by these machines are that they are light, fast, and incredibly strong, being tough enough to withstand being dropped in bunches by parachute.
