“Atomic Brilliance”

Since the world was startled by the dropping of the first-atom bomb there has been an increasing use of the word atomic in all sorts of peculiar contexts. For example, an actress was described in a film magazine as possessing “atomic”’ beauty. The latest use of the word locally is a sign on a jeweller’s window reading, “Gems of atomic brilliance.”

Double Meat Ration An allegation that some farmers who killed their own meat were also .making use of their own meat ration coupons was brought before the Dunedin executive of the Famine Emergency Committee by Mr C. MeDay. Mr McLay said a farmer had told him that some farmers who killed their own meat also obtained additional supplies from their butchers, thus securing a double ration of meat. Mr A. Thomas, who presided, said the same allegation had been to him. It was decided to ’ briffg the matter under the notice of ' the Famine Emergency headquarters : in' Wellington."
