TANEATUA HOME GUARD
Sir—l am very pleased to see that the good old Home Guards of Taneatua have not been forgotten and had a reunion on June 14. They are good old faithfuls and deserve to have their efforts recognised by such an occasion. I trust they will be all treated alike and not be told when they forgather that it is by invitation as was the case with the fiftieth reunion of the Opouriao settlers a few months back. On that occasion many of the old originals were left out and many more recent arrivals who knew nothing of the hardships of the pioneers enjoyed the ham and turkey.
Yours etc. ONE OF THEM.
SALE OF FISH
Sir, —The Borough Council bylaws dating back to 1908 prohibit the issuing of a license for a fisherman to hawk fresh fish in the Borough of Whakatane. Yet this does not obtain outside the Borough, with the result that Whakatane is always short of fish, while the surrounding 'districts, having no restricting bylaw reap the benefit. The Chamber of Commerce surely could go into this matter where a monopoly is certainly in evidence, and has existed for some considerable time. Unfortunately., it is the public that suffers, and every Whakatane resident knows that fresh fish, in anything like a reasonable supply is as scarce as hen’s teeth in the Borough. There is a prevailing idea that ‘fish makes brains’. Maybe it is the loss of it in our diet which has caused the apathy. Cannot some representation be made in the right quarter to end an anomaly like this, and so give everyone a square deal. Yours etc., BRITISH OUTLOOK. (We have referred the above to the Town Clerk for elucidation upon the whole position, and have been informed that the question of protection for fish retailers within the Borough is one covered by Government regulations, and does not come within the province of the local authorities’ standing by-laws. Ed.)
