PAHIATUA FAREWELL

TRIBUTES TO MR L. D. LOVELOCK - COUNCIL AND FIRE BOARD s. At the June meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council opportunity S. was taken by the Mayor and other Councillors to give their, official farewell to the Town Clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, who has since commenced his duties in a similar capacity to the Whakatane Borough Council.

The Mayor, Mr S. J. Judd, said that although -most Councillors had spoken previously they wished to once more thank him for his valuable service. Mr Lovelock had given Pahiatua 16 years faithful service and took with him the best wishes of the Councillors. Cr Siddells said he had been closely associated with Mr Lovelock during his term of office, and he had been a most efficient clerk, and that he had received promotion had been no surprise. This had been most deserved and the speaker was sure it would not be the last forward step. Cr Watts spoke of Mr Lovelock’s assistance to him. He had been most helpful in matters pertaining to the cemetery. On behalf of the Fire Board, Cr' W. A. Cathew said he once again wished to express the regret felt at Mr Lovelock’s departure. He had worked with great energy and had put in long hours in the interests of the Borough. He had been ever ready to assist in the activities of the town and had done many jobs of an honorary nature. ' That Mr Lovelock had not stinted his help was stated by Cr Sturton, who added that amongst his colleagues in N.Z. Mr Lovelock was looked upon as a coming man. He congratulated him on his civic pride and on his work in many directions. He had “done his bit” overseas and done a great deal for the betterment of his town in civilian life. Mr H. L. Pinfold spoke of the courtesy and helpfulness extended to the staff by Mr Lovelock. In making a presentation His Worship spoke of Mrs Lovelock’s civic work especially mentioning her work ior the Red Cross Transport, She. had done a big job and given & great deal of time and he asked that the thanks of the Council be conveyed to Mrs Lovelock.

Mr Lovelock said he had been proud to serve the Council. He had served under three Mayors, Cr S. |k. Siddells, Mr J. D. Wilson and Mr Judd. The guest stated as he glanced round the table that he was the “oldest” member, having been present from 1929. j Continuing, Mr Lovelock said a Councillors life was not “all beer and } skittles,” but he remarked on the j great interest taken by all. They had taken a broad view at all times and always thought of the whole district,, not being at all parochial. He spoke of the high standard of the borough which 'surpassed many in regard to drainage, sealed streets and especially the Garden Squares. The library was second to none. Mr (.Lovelock concluded by congratulating the newly appointed town clerk.
