WHAKATANE ROWING CLUB
Caledonian Hall Enlarged , The removal of the high staging of the Caledonian Hall, to floor level has made it possible to give an extra 30ft. for dancing space. Dancers at Thursday’s Ingleside were warm in their praise for this improvement which has made it possible to accommodate a much larger crowd than usual.
LAST week’s gale all but demolished the Rowing Club’s shed on the Whakatane harbour front. As it is, the force of the wind has lifted the building from its foundations and slanted the whole framing out of alignment- The Club which is at the present time housing boats and gear approximately in value £SOO is faced with the task of reinforcing and remodelling the building at an estimated cost of £4OO. Townspeople will recall the effort made by this community to save the shed in 1943, when it was in danger of collapsing. The new club today, composed mostly of men who have returned from overseas, is again in need of the same helpful and cooperative spirit. It has a total of 30 active members, and as many again honorary ones. It has sought to encourage young oarsmen, and this year has already raised £7O by various means, excluding £2O voted to the R.S.A. Memorial Fund. It is willing to help itself, but is faced with the bare fact that unless it can raise 5 times the sum in hand, to affect temporary repairs this winter, the shed will not be there to serve its purpose for the next season. Old rowers and others interested will probably welcome an opportunity of assisting towards this end and donations for the purpose will be handed over by this office to the Club Secretary. Here we feel is something which assumes the role of a civic responsibility, and towards the cost of which there will be many who will willingly contribute. „ ... '
