TALLY-HO!
WHAKATANE HUNTSMEN LOCAL CLUB FORMED If one can take account of the •old familiar toast “D’ye Ken - John Feel”, residents of the Taneatua and Te Teko districts may soon be “brought from their beds at the break of day” by “the sound of the horn in the morning” etc. for a Whakatane Hunt Club has now been established. Two meetings have been held and the hunt breakfast followed by the Opening Hunt are to take place on Saturday, June 22 at Taneatua.
The first meeting, which was held •to form the club, took place in the .Awakeri Hall. The attendance, which was definitely encouraging, left no doubt as to there being sufficient interest in the district for the proposed club to be a success. Mr G. G. Fogarty was in the chair.
The election of officers which was proceeded with after the club had been formally established, resulted
as under:— Patron: Mr H. C. Alexander. Vice-presidents: Mr G. T. Lodge and Mrs M. J. P. Dunderdale. Master of Field: Rev. Father Curly.
Whips: Messrs. B. Brosnahan and A. Stewart.' Joint Secretaries and Treasurers: Miss M: Kilbride and Mr K. Sisam. Auditor: Mr L. M. Roach. It was decided that the Opening Hunt should take place at Taneatua, .and hunts thereafter at Te Teko. Wire jumping, by unanimous opinion was barred. Subscriptions were fixed at £1 1/- (Follower); (Junior Follower) and 10/6 (Non-Follower) with a Capping Fee of 5/-. Details Finalised . The second meeting took place last Wednesday evening also at Awakeri. The chairman (Mr G. Fogarty) outlined his recent visit to Opotiki and stated that that club was prepared to devote four hunts per season, two on Saturdays and two on
-week days, to the Whakatane Club. . Details with regard to opening day were finalised, and it was decided that the time of the breakfast should be 10.30 a.m. in the Taneatua Hall. ■' The Opening Hunt itself would commence at approximately 11.30 a.m. Members, it was reported, had : bees in order to' have rails erected round the course. It was decided to extend an invitation to both Opotiki and Te Puke c Clubs to come through for the opening day, and it was anticipated that there would be approximately 150 people* in attendance. It has long been a mystery to us why the Whakatane district, renowned throughout the Bay for its splendid gymkhanas has not had an . old established club. Now, however, we feel sure that since a club has been formed, it will certainly lack nothing in support from the many residents of the district who cannot fail to be interested.
