THE “GOOD ENDEAVOUR” LEAGUE.

Wbat ho, what ho, ma heartier Well, well, scupper me if I wasn’t all but washed away last weekend by the enormous tides. I thought in fact that they were going to come right over the top of the Island the way the waves were surging up and down on the beach. The pets didn’t like it very much either, particularly Butinsky, who stayed in his box every time high tide was due, and only went outside at low tide. Butch called the moon all sorts of names, and kept on telling me that it was all the moon’s fault, and that if somebody, would only do something about that great useless hunk of moon hung up in the sky for no reason at all, we wouldn’t have all the trouble with tides, and in fact wouldn’t have any at all. By the time he had finished, he had traced the cause of everything evil that has happened in history back to the moon; but of course Butch is likely to forget himself now and again. Anyway, I sincerely hope that these tides don’t come too often. I have a little patch of peanuts growing down fairly near the water’s edge, and they were absolutely swamped. They didn’t get washed out, but were covered time and again with salty water, and now there is a thick layer of salt deposited by the sea over the top of the patch. I do not intend clearing it away, however, as the chances arp

that now I may be able to coax salted peanuts to grow. Well, I’m rather cramped for room this week (I can see I’ll have to have a chat to the Editor again) so Tiere’s cheerio. P.T.W. MY MAIL BOX Dear Peter the Whaler, I would like to join the Good Endeavour League. Would you please tell me how much I have to pay and I will send it in. My brother Terry would like to join too. He is six and I am eight. I have done this week’s competition. Barbara and Terry Burgess. (We’ll be right glad to have you aboard the Good Endeavour sailors. The fee to join is 3d each, and you receive a nice certificate of membership. P.T.W.) Dear Peter the Whaler, I would like very much to become a member of the Good Endeavour League. I am 12 years old and I live on a farm at Te Teko. Yours sincerely, Barry Devonshire. (Step aboard Barry. I will forward your certificate. P.T.D.) RIDDLES What is the easiest way to swallow a door?—Bolt it.
Why is a spider a good correspondent?—Because he drops a line by every post. What kind of lions are allowed in public parks?—Dandelions. Why is a little man like a good book?—Because he is often looked over. (Three points to Pauline Cradwick. P.T.W.) LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION NURSERY RHYMES Yo-ho, yo-ho, you all certainly seem to know your nursery rhymes without any trouble at all. Do you know sailors that I received dozens of replies, and every darn one of ’em was right, absolutely correct. Whew, by the time I had finally sorted out four crew members for prizes (those who sent in the neatest entries), I was properly stonkered. Tickets this week go to:— Gabrielle Wright Beverley Murray Paul Simpson Colin Hammond. Congratulations sailors, you may collect your tickets from the Beacon Office, with my best compliments. P.T.W. NEXT WEEK’S COMPETITION I’ve decided that it’s about time we had another joke competition. This time, the three or four best ones will receive tickets, and every other one printed during the following few weeks will be awarded points. You may send in as many jokes as you wish, but you must mark them ‘Original’ or ‘Copied’ according to whether you have made them up yourself or copied them from somewhere. If you copy them, try to pick them from a paper which is not widely read, otherwise the jokes will be stale. Meanwhile, I am trying to sort out a painting competition for you. P.T.W.
