GOAT MEAT FOR EXPORT
The New Zealand Meat Producers Board reports that over 500 goats were slaughtered at the Horotiu freezing works recently. This is the first line of these animals to be dealt with for export in the Auckland district and it is expected that thousands more will be handled during the next few weeks. Initial reports state that the meat produced was of quite good quality. Mr F. C. Johnstone, a member of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board was responsible for initiating the drive for these animals and he was greatly assisted by the co-operation of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co. Ltd.
Goats have been killed for export at the Wairoa freezing works during the past two years and approximately 150,0001b5. of ths meat . product has been shipped to Britain. It is expected that several thousand goats will shortly be dealt with at the Whakatu freezing works.
Though small in volume as compared with other classes of meat exported, this production will be a valuable contribution towards relieving the food shortage.
