SLADDEN’S TRACK
QUESTION OF ROADWAY ACCESS OPENING UP NEW LAND In a communication to the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday, Mr J. G. Cliff McCulloch stated that consideration was being given to the urgent desirability of making Sladden’s Track into a road suitable for giving access to the country behind his Aererutahi Run, and at comparatively small cost it could be continued to link up with the road at present under construction through the block recently owned by Mr C. Ryon at present being developed for soldier settlement. Such road when completed would form a connecting link between the Wainui Main Highway and Burnett’s Road and would be of great value in the development and improved carrying capacity of a 2000 acre block of productive country. The original specifications of Sladden’s Track, which was a dedicated county road, had never been maintained and the country through which it ran had for many years paid very substantial rates to the County, without any return to the ratepayer beyond his general interest in the county roads as a whole. The council was asked to give consideration to paying its share towards the construction of its portion of road to the extent of its original specifications.
It was resolved that the application be referred to Cr Burnett and the County Engineer to confer with Mr McCulloch on the ground, and to report back.
