Formation of New Road
A petition signed by fourteen settlers in the area concerned came be - fore the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday requesting the formation of a new road to link up with the Matata-Whakatane highway and the Herepuru road leading to Manawahe. The petitioners expressed a willingness to form a special riding area for the purpose to be liable to a rate not exceeding 7d in the £. The clerk stated that the council in short was asked to advance £1750, which would be repayable over 17 or 18 years. It was decided to advertise the intention of the council to form the rating area and to finalise the position at the June meeting. Waimana River Diversion Owing to the level of the river keeping high it has been impossible to use a bulldozer for the pui’pose of widening the intake to the cut and strengthening the bank on the top end of the groyne. This work will be carried out as soon as circumstances permit. The width of the diversion cut continues to increase with each heavy rain and is now reaching normal river proportions. A meeting of settlers adjacent to the cut, together with the Waimana Riding member and the writer took place recently and it was decided that the property boundaries be re-defined. It was necessax-y to send to Auckland for survey data. This has now come to hand and the re-defination can proceed. (Extract County Engineer’s May report).
