The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 1946

Local and General

No Publication Next Monday Advertisers and readers are reminded that there will be no publication of the BEACON on Monday next, which is honoured as the King’s Birthday and listed as a statutory holiday. The office and printing factory will be closed all day, and all advertisements held over until Wednesday’s publication. Construction at School

Efforts on the part of the Whakatane School Committee over the past months to secure additional accommodation at the Whakatane District High School have at last borne fruit. Four new rooms are to be added to the school buildings, two to the primary school and two to the secondary department. The timber is on the job, and construction of the first two rooms, those for the primary children is already under way. “Get Back Off the Line”

’ The attention of spectators at football matches at the Domain is drawn to the necessity for keeping well back to the line—behind the fence erected for just that purpose. In this manner, every one can obtain a good View of the match. It is nothing more nor less than unthinking selfishness for part of the crowd, when the play is at one end of the field, to surge forward over the line, and completely block the view of those standing further along. Ladies’ Golf Tourney Lady players of the Whakatane Golf Club, are reminded of the King’s Birthday weekend tournament (2nd and 3rd June) which promises to be an outstanding event in the club’s history. The committee responsible for promoting the tournament is faced with a considerable task in the catering department and would be grateful if any placers not wishing to play the full 36 holes in one day would make their services available in this direction. Those • willing to assist should contact the secretary.

Mr Semple’s Visit Indefinite The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) has advised Mr W. Sullivan M.P. that while it has not been possible to arrange a date for a visit to the Bay of Plenty information would be given as soon as any definite arrangements could be made.

A.T.C. Quiz Now becoming a popular feature in the Beacon is the ‘A.T.C. Quiz.’ Each week several entries have been received, and the number is now in the vicinity of ten. Not only A.T.C. cadets are sending in replies, but also other readers, who, on the whole, display considerable knowledge of the subjects which the questions concern.

Native Rates & Inspector’s Returns Receipts from Native rates in the Whakatane County were last year the highest on record and amounted to £5626. The chairman of the County Council commented favourably on this fact at Tuesday’s meeting. He also intimated that receipts from the Inspector’s Department totalled £5400. •

Bad News For Local Smokers Whakatane merchants advise that the most recent allocation of Canadian cigarettes to this district was greatly reduced through pillage. This will mean that the usual ration will be heavily cut down and that smokers will have to forego further of their meagre rations. We are informed that the pilfering did not take place locally.

Forthcoming Otakiri Ball . The forthcoming Otakiri Ball, organised by the Welcome Home Committee, which is to be held on the night of the King’s Birthday, June 34rd., promises to be one of the outstanding events of the dancing calendar. The ball will represent the final dance to be organised by the committee, and will be in the nature of a ydnd-up to the very useful activities performed by that body during the war years. Freddie Burt’s Orchestra has been engaged, and supper, par excellence, will be served. It is understood that a free bus is to run from the Rock for the convenience of Whakatane patrons.
