TARANAKI JERSEY SALE
SUBSTANTIAL PRICES PAID MR LES EERG’S BID Third highest price of 410 guineas at the Jersey week sales just concluded in Taranaki was paid by Mr L. Berg, owner of a prominent Jersey stud at Whakatane. Top prices of 600gns and 550gns were paid by two Auckland district breeders, but Mr Berg’s bid was for a four-year-old cow of the Mountain Meadows stud. Like the 550gns cow, Mr Berg’s purchase was a daughter of Woodland’s Gay Vagabond. Mr Les Berg was formerly of Stratford and began breeding Jerseys in the Bay of Plenty in partnership with the late Mr J. Boon, also of Stratford. The dispersal of their well known Jersey stud was the sensation of Jersey week last year. Mountain Meadows Prim, bred by Mr F. V. Green, opened at 200gns and soon rose to 410. Details of the sale are:— Mountain Meadows Prim V.H.C., born 1941 (Woodlands Gay Vagabond—Mountain Meadows Alice H.C. C.P.) L. Berg, Whakatane, 410 gns. The Bay of Plenty was well represented at the sales which spread over eight days and included among the 595 animals the dispersal or reduction of some of the best known studs in the province. The WaikatoWaipa and the Hauraki Plains districts will benefit largely, about onetenth of the £30,000 expended being from the former and some £I7OO by the latter. However, more than £2OOO was spent by Bay of Plenty dairymen. Largest buyer in the district was Mr A. C. Wright, Te Puke, who paid 550gns for seven animals. Mr K. Bennett and Mr W. Riddell, Paengaroa, each bought three prize Jerseys.
