AERODROME

SOME COUNTY OPINIONS SUITABILITY OF SANDHILLS In the course of a discussion on the proposed road across the Orini Cut, at yesterday’s County Council meeting, Cr Luxton mentioned the proposal to establish an aerodrome on the sandhills country adjoining the golf links at Piripai. The area he said had been inspected by members of the Aero Club executive who were unanimous that it would make a splendid site in every way. Cr McCready warned against the expenditure on aerodromes, which he said could run into stupendous figures. He quoted the new landing field at Timaru which had cost £91,000, and which he claimed was only good for landing ducks on. Cr Luxton: The land in view is possibly some of the cheapest we could get anywhere in the county. The golf club only paid £1 per acre for theirs, and though I doubt whether the Aero Club could get it as cheaply, I am certain it would cost far less than any other suitable land. Cr Hunter: But will it take grass? Cr Luxton: If Cr Hunter will come out for a game of golf, I’ll show him some of the finest pastures in the county.
