“FARMER JOHN”
What ’s the matter with Farmer John? He’s fuddled and fooled and he’s put upon. He has toiled and saved since he first began And he finds that he’s still just a working man. And his land—which he’d dreamed . was to make him rich, Makes him scratch— and he blames Walter Nash for his itch. And men in white collars detest his smell, The sweat of his garments, his labours as well. And the chap on the wharf bears a truculant hate For white men who toil—and no overtime rate. He doesn’t know whether he’s foe or friend To the great big bank with the dividend, And he doesn’t know whether he’s friend or foe To the chap on the wharf—so wearily slow. But both of them batten on Farmer John, He’s fuddled and fooled and he’s “put upon.” “A FARMER JOHN”
