A World Record At the Santa Anita (California) meeting last month a world record for a three furlongs event was registered by Distaff, a two year old filly by Beau Pere, who slipped over the distance in 32 3-ssecs. She was bred and is owned by the American picture magnate, W. Louis Mayer. High Grade Jumpers The 1943 Grand National winner Anglo-French, is in strong work at Invercargill. Arabian Night, a favourite for the big jumping event at Ellerslie has been withdrawn which fact will tend to make it more easy for the other leading lights. A Grand National Winner Master Meruit, last year’s winner of the National Hurdles, is not to compete at the Waikato meeting, but is being brought through from Taranaki to Ellerslie this week. He has been pleasing his connections by fine displays of negotiating big obstacles at Hawera. Grey Salute for Hurdling Mr W. S. Goosman’s Grey Salute is being schooled over the battens at Te Rapa. This highly bred candidate has not been the success expected on the fiat, but is quite likely to make good as a hurdler, as he wilL have plenty of pace between the obstacles. By Solicitor-General, his dam Menteith is by Hunting Song from Vernacher by Martian —Samisen by Birkenhead. He was bred and is owned by Mr Geo. Courtney, of Ngatea, and is quite a prominent galloper, with a fine finishing run. Subject to Improvement Representative is to have his second attempt over the battens in the Seddon Hurdles at Te Rapa. If he is to be prominent in the Great Northern Hurdles he will have to improve very much on his Paeroa essay.
