UNUSUAL NAMES
SOME UNFORTUNATE CHILDREN The tendency of parents to be influenced by events of the times in bestowing names upon their children is strongly illustrated in a series of unusual Christian names given some Hawke’s Bay children during the war. One Maori child in Central Hawke’s Bay is destined to go through life bearing the strange name Final Leave. Place-names have played a prominent part in the selection of Christian names, as has been borne out in past wars. The American influence is reflected in such names as Tennessee and Alabama, while such names as Maadi, Trieste, El Alamein, Syria, Egypt, Darwin and Crete are to be found in the records of the official registrar at Hastings. Winston is a popular Christian name selected by a number of parents in Hastings. One Maori boy has been named Battalion. Because she was his tenth child, one Hawke’s Bay parent selected the name Decima for his latest daughter.
