WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OTAKIRI’S BIRTHDAY MEETING

The Otakiri Women’s Institute Birthday Party took the form of a luncheon as this year the Institute movement in New Zealand is 25 years old and it was felt that something special would be appropriate. About 150 ladies sat down to luncheon. Guests from the following Institutes and Women’s Division were present: Whakatane W. 1., Edgecumbe W. 1., Thornton W. 1., Matata W. 1., Manawahe W. 1., Awakeri W.D., and Te Teko W.D. The stage was beautifully decorated with masses of flowers and the Institute banner prominently hung. The long tables were laden with good things. The luncheon consisted of poultry with salads and hot-mashed potatoes followed with jellies and fruit salad.

The singing of ‘Grace’ opened the day and after luncheon Mrs G. Murray presented bouquets to Mrs Armstrong, president, Mrs Peck, vice-president and Mrs Cristall, secretary with a few suitable words on their splendid work during the year. The guests spent a short time in making each others acquaintance, while the hall was re-arranged. Mrs Gilbert opened the afternoon entertainment with a pianoforte solo in which all delighted. Mrs Carr then presented a short poem of her own composing which caused much laughter. The music group then gave 2 songs and showed their ability in this direction. Mrs Cristall then did the short acting test asked for the Eisteddfod but instead of seriously, she performed it humorously, with clothes perhaps 50 years old. This created more mirth. ‘Apple Blossom’ another Eisteddfod Choral speaking piece were performed lightly—as Mrs Armstrong said, ‘one wonders yatA what the judge would have said to those toffee apples and the school girls clothes which caused so much fun. Two wall competitions and a delightful afternoon tea brought the gathering to a close. The following competitions were won: Mop, Ruth Tunnicliffe; dinner,

Mrs Butler; tray of sweets, Mrs Smith eggless, butterless, sugarless cake, Mrs Missen 1, Mrs Mackerell 2, Mrs Peck 3.

MONTHLY MEETING

WAIMANA-NUKUHOU The May meeting of the WaimanaNukuhou Women’s Institute was held last Wednesday in the Waimana Hall. The* singing of the Institute song opened the proceedings, and the aspirations were recited in unison.

Mrs Wylde was appointed delegate to the A. and P. Show meeting in Whakatane. Two new members were welcomed, Mrs H. Whiteman and Mrs Taylor. Mrs I. Savage gave a very full and good report of the annual Federation meeting. The Golden Thread—a favourite poem of General McArthur—was read by Miss Z. White. The roll call was “Hints on Sewing Electrically” and useful tips were exchanged. The lucky parcel caused great laughter.

The day’s competition drew good entries and were judged by Mrs P. Looney and Mrs Stansbury. The results were as follows: Best double flower: Mrs H. Bell 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Best single flower: Miss F. Woolfield 1,

Miss E. Wardlaw 2, Mrs Stevenson 3. Best vegetable: Mrs A. McDonald 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs S. Eagle 3. Bran biscuits: Mrs King 1, Mrs F. Savage 2, Mrs Stevenson 3. White coat spray for Mother’s Day: Mrs Wylde 1, Mrs Woolfield 2, Mrs Stevenson 3.

When afternoon tea had been served Mrs Savage extended thanks to the hostesses, and to the judges for their help during the meeting. The National Anthem concluded the afternoon.
