RED CROSS

WHAKATANE SUB-CENTRE

CO-OPERATION WITH C.0.R.5.0

The Red Cross Committee held its monthly meeting in the Red Cross Rooms on Tuesday, May 15, at 2.30 p.m. Mrs Winstone said that the CORSO Committee, whose formatidn had been sponsored by the ‘Red Cross, had been set up and was in action. The President was Mr KingsleySmith and the Secretary (pro tern) Mrs Winstone. Three sub-commit-tees Food, Clothing and Finance had been formed and were in operation. Mrs Winstone had found that other organisations’had not been supplied with the necessary information, and she had attended several meetings to explain C.0.R.5.0. Following the recommendation of the C.0.R.5.0. Clothing Committee, the Red Cross Committee decided to open the Red Cross rooms daily from Monday to Friday during the month of June for an intensive sewing campaign. All ladies who could put in a day, afternoon or even an hour would be very welcome. Material would be provided, as well as wool for knitting, and cups of tea would be available. Ladies preferring to take articles home could do so. It was hoped to have a substantial number of cases ready to despatch at the end of the month so that the goods might be distributed before the winter.

Mrs Winstone said C.0.R.5.0. hoped to organise a clothes drive, the clothing to be divided among the various organisations working for C.0.R.5.0. It was decided that the Red Cross Room be offered to C.0.R.5.0. for a receiving depot for the drive. Mrs Sullivan made a statement on the building. The full amount was paid and there were no outstanding liabilities. The building was already finding many uses, and the V.A. Training Room was in operation for Home Nursing classes. It was decided to organise an appeal for funds for sending food to Britain, and to join with the Waikato Centre in this. This cheme .assured that every penny donated would go for food which was bought at a discount off wholesale prices, packed & railed free & shipped free to England each month, where it is distributed , where most needed. Members considered that no finer scheme could be found and it was decided to launch the appeal in June. The C.0.R.5.0. appeal for teams for overseas takes place on May 24, so this ensures that there will be no interference with the C.0.R.5.0. street day.

The committee decided also to have monthly stalls for general funds. Members stated that they had been told that the Red Cross shop was missed by its supporters, especially the supplies of fresh produce. The first stall was to be held in July.

There were two innovations at this meeting—one was that members sewed as they deliberated, and the second was that afternoon tea was served by Mrs Barry, and very much appreciated. It was agreed that members take turns at making' the tea.
